There are a number of people who can plan their lives well and can firmly stick to their goals even in the midst of distractions. There are also those who suck at goal-setting (and it’s completely understandable) merely because they don’t really know what they want in life. 

Do you want to finish school this coming year? Or maybe get your first car? Or maybe move to a new place and get a new job? Maybe adopting a new pet is part of your wish list. Whatever it is, remember that all goals are valid and your actions towards achieving those goals is very important. 

So what’s the first step to setting goals? 

List them down. Know what you want to achieve and put them on writing. That way, you are able to keep track of everything and at the same time, monitor your progress along the way. 

Beyond the note-taking lies a far greater challenge which is sticking to your goals. How do you conquer the stressful battle of going astray? Here, we have enumerated a couple of tips on how you can stick to your goals (and later on, reach them). 

1. Choose one major goal

Okay, so you may have a bunch of goals in mind but try to pick one major goal that encompasses all your other goals. Is it to build your own business? Or invest into some properties? Or maybe shifting to a more fulfilling career. 

Note that taking on too much all at once can be daunting. It can be particularly difficult too because establishing new behavioral patterns takes time. Focusing your efforts on one specific goal makes keeping a resolution much more achievable (Cherry, 2018). 

2. Start small

Everything really has to start small. Don’t overdo your diet or over exhaust yourself at the gym. Don’t make big investments on things you aren’t sure. Don’t change your behavioural pattern drastically just because you want to achieve your goals in a snap. It doesn’t work that way. Take calculated risks and remember to move forward slowly and gradually. Baby steps, yes?

3. Take note of your past failures and don’t repeat them

You’ve probably set the same goal 2 or 3 years ago and you probably have not achieved it yet because you’ve made a couple of mistakes along the way. Good news is, it’s totally fine. As mentioned, it’s always best to take things slow and learn from each stage. However, you have to take note of your past failures. What hindered from making it to your destination? What were your past struggles? How do you reverse the errors. 

Try evaluating your decisions and the results of your actions. What worked and what didn’t work? 

At the end of the day, remember that setting goals and working towards them also means turning your vision into reality. Which were the least effective? What has prevented you from keeping your resolution in past years? By changing your approach, you will be more likely to see real results on your next evaluation (Cherry, 2018).

4. Seek advice from experts

Get a mentor. Seek advice from people who have proven themselves to be good at goal-setting (and have achieve all their set goals). It can be your grade school teacher or your friendly neighbour. Be open to them and share with them your inner struggles so they can give the best advice.

5. Get support from family and friends

It is always best to have a solid supporting system who can give you a pat whether you make or break it in life. At the same time, encouraging words from people you love can help you keep motivated and focused. 

Explain what your goals are to your close friends or family and ask them to help you achieve your objectives. Better yet, enlist the help of others by joining a group that shares your goal (Cherry, 2018).

6. Understand the vision

It is important that you try to reach for meaningful goals. What is the vision behind it? What is the cause? 

Note that we will always do more to achieve a goal that has a deep-rooted meaning to us than we will to achieve something that’s superficial. So, if you want to have a million dollar net worth because of the status it affords, you can forget about your chances for success (

7. Make sure your goals are time-bound

Is this your goal for the entire year? Or the first quarter? Or maybe a seasonal thing? 

Select an actual date on the calendar for your specific goal own to the very day of the week. When your goal is specific and measurable, it’s trackable. When you give it a real date on the calendar, you can break it down into monthly and weekly goals. This way, you can chart your progress to determine how far or close you are to achieving that goal (

8.  Check your progress

Know that is always important to keep track of things. Pick a system and do your own barometer. Are you doing really great so far or are you veering away from what is set?

9. Readjust your approach if needed

Now this is a product of your close monitoring. If things aren’t working that way you plotted them, learn to stir the wheel and readjust. Asses your turning points and ask yourself a few questions —where have you gone wrong and what can you do to correct them? What are your alternative ways? How do you move from this point and that?

10. Just Keep Working

At the end of the day, it all boils down to your motivation in achieving the goals you have set. How determined are you? Remember that there is no other way but to just do it. Goals are nothing if you don’t live for them. So now it’s the perfect time to move your ass, isn’t it?
